About

Who's on the other end of the screen

Hi, I'm Ben. I'm based in Rhode Island, and I've spent years building hands-on cybersecurity knowledge and I'm currently working through my CompTIA Security+ certification. I started Hearth & Firewall because most people I know have no idea whether their computer is actually safe, and the usual options are either a call center reading a script or a big-box store upsell. I wanted something more honest: a real person, explaining what's actually wrong, fixing it at a fair flat price.

You've probably heard warnings about tech support scams that use tools like AnyDesk or TeamViewer to take over someone's computer. That's exactly why I don't use them. I use different, on-demand-only software that gives me access for the length of our session and nothing more.

Common Questions

Before you reach out

Is it actually safe to let a stranger remote into my computer?

Every session uses on-demand remote access. It only works while we're both connected and ends the moment we're done, nothing stays installed or running afterward. I'm on video the whole time too, so you can see exactly who's on the other end.

Will you see my passwords or bank account while you're in there?

No. I don't ask for or retain your passwords, password manager vault, or any other credential, and access ends the moment the session does, nothing stays installed or logged in afterward. If a password ever needs to be typed during a session, you type it yourself, on your own screen.

What if you can't fix the problem?

On the Basic Cleanup tier, if I can't resolve the issue, you don't pay. For the other tiers, I'll tell you honestly before starting if something looks outside what a remote session can fix.

Do you keep recordings of the session?

Only if you agree to it, and only for quality and dispute protection. It's spelled out in the service agreement I send before every job, and you can decline recording if you'd rather not.

What if I can't do a remote session?

Mail-in service is available within the U.S. A prepaid shipping label, free both ways, is included on Full Protection Setup. For Basic Cleanup and Hardening & Tune-Up, mail-in is available too, you just cover shipping both ways. Either way, I'll clean it up, lock it down, and ship your device back.

How do I pay, and when?

Flat rate, agreed before I start, no surprise charges. You pay only once the work is finished and you're happy with it, while we're still connected, so nothing is ever paid up front. Payment is by credit or debit card through a secure Square link I send you (you enter your card yourself, I never see the numbers), and you get a receipt. Prefer a bank transfer instead? Just ask.

What if I need to reschedule?

No problem, life happens. Just give me a day's notice when you can, and we'll find a new time at no charge. If something comes up at the last minute, reach out and we'll sort it out.
